Most fruits are sweet and therefore it is likely to believe that fruit eaters have a sweet tooth. However, this has not been investigated scientifically in Europe, so ISAFRUIT researchers conducted online questionnaires among 2083 consumers in Spain, the Netherlands, Poland and Greece. The consumers were asked about their preferences for sweet, sour and salty tastes and these were compared to their consumption of fruit. Results show that 48% of the total sample preferred a salty taste, 34% preferred sweet and 18% preferred a sour taste. People who preferred a sweet taste consume more chocolate bars, people who preferred salty taste consume more crisps and people who preferred sour tastes consume more apples, peaches, orange juice and dried fruit. As sour taste preferences seem to be more widespread than sweet taste preferences among fruit eaters, the existence of a sweet tooth is probably a tall tale.
I guess having a sweet tooth is just an expression. I have loved chocolates since time immemorial, and I'm lucky because I don't have cavities at all. I have a very good dentist who takes care of my teeth. He advised me to eat all fruits like apples and mangoes. I guess I have a sweet tooth then.
