Trends in fruit consumption

  • Will we eat more fruit in the future? ISAFRUIT researchers have carried out interviews with experts from within and outside the fruit sector in Greece, Spain, The Netherlands and Poland to find out what the future trends in fruit consumption are likely to be. Will fruit consumption in Europe increase and what are the most important factors for increasing which fruit consumption; health, price, sustainability, convenience or more products to choose from? European consumer segmentation for fruit

  • Based on a large consumer survey with more than 2000 respondents, consumers can be divided into several groups depending on which benefits they consider as most important when eating food. Karin Zimmerman, (Strategic marketing and senior project manager, LEI Wageningen UR, The Netherlands) presents some of the groups and explains their importance for developing fruit marketing strategies. A qualitative analysis on trends in fruit consumption in four European countries

  • Presentation by Dr Jos Bartels (University of Wageningen, The Netherlands) about which important determinants will ensure the success of future fruit innovations. The results presented are based on interviews with fruit experts inside and outside of the fruit sector in four European countries (ISAFRUIT Forum, Brussels, October 2008).


 

Improving Consumer-Driven Innovation in Fruit Supply Chain Networks

  • Ruud van Uffelen, M.Sc., Wageningen University and Research Centre, about how fruit innovation supply chains can be more consumer-driven. The talk is based on the preliminary results from a survey of processing and fresh fruit companies in Greece, Poland, Spain and The Netherlands (ISAFRUIT Forum, Brussels, October 2008).  


 

Increasing the Consumption of Fruit & Vegetables by school children: Which Role for the European Union?

  • Design of an EC policy for the European School Fruit Scheme. Reasons for making a policy, stakeholders and implementation. Presentation by Felix Mittermayer, member of the European Commision (ISAFRUIT Forum, Brussels, October 2008). 


What kind of fruit products could we have in the future?

  • How can consumer demands for convenient and nutritious fruit products be fulfilled? Catherine Renard, Department of Fruit Quality, Preservation and Processing, INRA, France presents some of the results from the work with processed fruit products in ISAFRUIT.

 

Which apple and peach varieties do consumers prefer?

  • A European consumer survey involving 5000 respondents have demonstrated that it is possible to segment consumers according to taste preferences for new apple and peach varieties; an important discovery for marketing. Presentation by Joan Bonany, Director, Fruit Research Program, IRTA, Spain.


 

How to convince consumers to eat more fruit?

  • Development of partnerships between the industry and health organisations has played a key role in increasing fruit consumption by 43 % in Denmark over a period of 10 years. Morten Meyer, Project manager, Danish Cancer Society presents how partnerships and increased fruit availability in the physical environment, serve as an effective strategy to increase fruit consumption.

 

Fruit allergens –strategies to decrease the risk and consequences of fruit allergy

  • Apple, the fruit that most frequently causes allergy, is used as an example to present strategies for how fruit allergy sufferers can safely eat fruits without suffering allergic symptoms. How can genetics bring new interesting characteristics to fruit varieties?

  • Development of improved fruit varieties by investigating gene transfer strategies and the inheritance of quality traits. Presentation by Yves Lespinasse, coordinator of the Fruit Species Improvement, INRA, France.

  • Presentation of innovative products and processes from ISAFRUIT (high pressure processing, microwave processing, fresh cut products, ready-desserts, juices and dried fruit products). Presentation by Witold Plocharski, Ph.D, Head of Department of Storage and Processing, Research institute of Pomology and Floriculture, Poland.


 

Trends in apple breeding and new varieties on the market

  • Review of the main characteristics of future apples varieties and how they are experimentally tested. Presentation by Sandrine Codarin, Scientist of the Team Apple and Pear, Ctifl, France. Please note that this presentation is in French.

  • Consumer-oriented approach to development of new fruit products. Results from a consumer survey carried out in four countries and with 1972 respondents. Presentation by Ivo van der Lans, assistant professor, Marketing and Consumer Behaviour Group, University of Wageningen, The Netherlands.

  • Results from postharvest treatments of apples and peaches with hot water, generally recognised as safe (GRAS) compounds and biological control agents (BCA). Presentation by Paolo Bertolini, Head of Department of Protection and Improvement of Agricultural Food Products, CRIOF, University of Bologna, Italy.



Environmental friendly and safer way to produce top quality fruits

  • New innovative preharvest technologies for fruit thinning, spray application and quality management. Presentation by Lukas Bertschinger, Agroscope Changins-Wädenswill Research Station (ACW), Switzerland.

 

Improving profit, Bio or IP? New decision support tools

  • For three years, orchard management has been observed in Germany within ISAFRUIT comparing profit in organic (bio) and integrated (IP) production. Presentation by Esther Bravin, Scientist of the team “Extension Fruit and Vegetables” –Agroscope Changins-Wädenswil Research Station ACW, Switzerland. Fruit and obesity, is fruit a food for better weight maintenance?

  • Results from the ISAFRUIT 'Fruit at Work' study regarding snacking behavior at work and how this can be influenced by offering free fruit. Presentation by Charlotte Bryant, research nutritionist, University of Newcastle.
